Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

“Jiu jitsu and martial arts do not build character, they reveal it. We are all born with unmeasurable courage and determination, but it is as we go through the trials of rigorous training that we rediscover those gifts.” – Ricardo Almeida

brazilian jiu jitsu

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art, combat sport and a form of self-defence that focuses on grappling and especially ground fighting. It focuses on the skill of taking an opponent to the ground, controlling one’s opponent, gaining a dominant position and using a number of techniques to force them into submission via joint locks or chokeholds.

It was made famous by the Gracie family and their victories in the early Ultimate Fighting Championships and challenge matches against other martial arts. Now it is considered a core skill for almost any professional fighter and is often used in training the Armed Forces, Police and Security personnel.

We have specific fundamental classes that give you an introduction into the art, teaching you the self defence moves, throws and fundamental ground positions.

We are proud to be part of team Checkmat.

What equipment will I need?

You will need a BJJ gi (also called a kimono). If you do not have one, you can train initially in a t-shirt and shorts providing there are no zips, buttons or other sharp parts. It is advisable to have a mouth guard.

Do I need to pre-book?

Yes, at this time due to Covid restrictions, all classes must be pre-booked.
